St. Paul began tournament play at Telfer Park on August 22nd by beating Berean Baptist by a score of 14-4 in 5 innings due to the 10 run rule. After Berean scored twice in the first, St. Paul came out like gang busters as they tallied 6 runs in the bottom of the first for a 6-2 lead. St. Paul added 2 in the second and 3 in the third for an 11-3 lead. Berean added one in the fourth while St. Paul added 2 for a 13-4 lead. In the 5th St. Paul scored the 14th run to end the game and move on to the semi-finals the next week. Travis Alexander was perfect at 4 for 4 including 3 doubles and a triple while scoring all 4 times. Brendon Stavn also was 4 for 4 while Mike Stavn went 3 for 3 with 2 doubles. Mike and Marty Scott each drove in 3 runs to lead in RBI’s. On August 29th, St. Paul played PGUMC and continued their hot bats. St. Paul scored 3 time in the first while PGUMC scored twice. St. Paul added 2 in the second for a 5-2 lead. No scoring in the third or fourth innings for an exciting game. In the 5th inning St. Paul exploded with the first 6 hitters getting hits and scoring 5 runs before it was over. In the 6th each team scored twice for a 12-4 score. Neither team scored in the 7th for the final St. Paul win and on to the championship game. Travis Alexander was once again 4 for 4 as was Sean Behm for the team leaders. The Championship game against Hope Black was exciting although St. Paul came out on the short end. Hope scored 4 in the first and the score was 5-2 after 3 innings. Hope added 5 in the 4th inning to take a commanding lead of 10-2. However, St. Paul sprang alive scoring 6 times in the 5th to cut the lead to 10-8. Unfortunately Hope came back to score 4 in the 6th and 5 in the 7thwhile St. Paul could only score once for a final of 19-9. Brad Thompson, Mike Stavn, Sam Behm, Brendon and Mike Stavn each collected 3 hits for St. Paul. St. Paul finished 6-8 for the regular season and 2-1 in the tournament for an overall record of 8-9 for the year. Roger Neitzel announced that he is retiring from the church league after 28 years to focus playing in over 60 leagues in Rockford/Cherry Valley next year.
