ELCA South-Central Synod of Wisconsin Bishop, Mary Froiland, was guest speaker on Thursday, May 22, at the St. Paul’s OWLS (Older Wiser Lutheran Seniors) monthly gathering. All other area ELCA church members were invited with several attending. The synod office is located in Madison, WI.

Bishop Froiland was elected last fall as Bishop of the South-Central Synod of Wisconsin. She is the first woman to serve in this position for this synod. Froiland has a real connection to the Beloit area. She served as Pastor at Our Saviors Lutheran church several years ago. While taking some time off from the ministry, she worked at Elder-Beermans department store. During that time she was a member at St. Paul Lutheran church. For several years prior to becoming Bishop, Froiland was Pastor at Luther Valley Church, located between Beloit and Orfordville.

Following a traditional Lutheran potluck lunch, Bishop Froiland spoke to over 50 OWLS and guests. She covered several topics beginning with a scripture reading and asking for audience participation by asking them to respond to the question, “I wonder what that means?” Several people responded with a Bible study style dialogue.

The Bishop then defined that while the Synod office is located in Madison, the Synod is comprised of 145 congregations in south central Wisconsin. The Synod staff purpose is to: Care for; Help connect; and Equip, all congregation staff and members. “We are a church that says YES!” she added.
